Self Help is the regionís oldest and one of the most successful Head Start organizations. This project was an effort to consolidate its daycare facilities, which had been in leased properties. The program combined 17 classrooms with administrative space for 35 people. The building is sited to afford maximum visibility from heavily traveled Howard Street and to enclose the childrenís playground. Separate entries for daycare clients and visitors have been included along with the capability to add 8 more classes. The building is clad in a two-toned, banded brick pattern and is very energy efficient. Glass percentage is 17.5% and all classrooms have individually controlled HVAC units. The building also includes a full service production kitchen.
